Sundari Mohan Das, the founder-principal of the Calcutta National Medical College, was born on this day in Sylhet.
He obtained his medical degree from Calcutta Medical College and had a private practice in his early years in Sylhet, where he was greatly moved by the condition of the poor and of women.
Later, he returned to Calcutta and worked as a health inspector for the municipality, but resigned in protest.
Participating in the Swadeshi movement, he played a key role in promoting national education in technical and medical fields. He co-founded the Bengal Technical Institute and was engaged with the National Council of Education.
When students from Calcutta Medical College boycotted the institution, he stepped forward to provide an alternative and with the help of others, founded the National Medical Institute, which led to the establishment of Calcutta National Medical College.
