On this day, Hicky’s Bengal Gazette mentions: “The Gentlemen of the Calcutta Cricket Club”… “getting themselves into Wind, and preparing to take the Field for a very active Campaign”. This has led to speculation about whether the date of publication makes the club the oldest cricket club in the world.
According to Raju Mukherji, the club, likely to have been the meeting ground for the British as no Indian played cricket then, initially played where the Mohammedan Sporting ground is at present. Then it moved on “towards the open land where the Police and Custom grounds now exist”.
