On this day, at a meeting in Town Hall, Raja Rammohun Roy had stated that “the greater our intercourse with the European gentlemen, the greater will be our improvement in literary, social and political affairs”.
This statement and a few similar ones made by him have been interpreted as endorsing the European viewpoint at the expense of Indians. But Roy, whose efforts had led to the banning of the practice of sati, had also raised his voice several times criticising the laws and administration of the colonial British government.
