The ship Calcutta, launched in July 1852 and registered in London, made several voyages between England and Bengal. On one of these voyages, it left on December 14, 1853, from Southampton for Calcutta, with Captain John Goodall at the helm and a little less than a hundred passengers.
It was carrying a cargo of general merchandise and “specie value” £40,000 sterling. Of this £28,000 was in gold for Mauritius, £5,000 in silver for Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) and £7,000 in gold for Madras (now Chennai).
On March 3, 1854, it reached Calcutta via the Cape of Good Hope. On April 15, 1854, it sailed from Calcutta for England with 175 passengers, under Captain Goodall.
Several ships were named Calcutta from late 18th century.
