Howrah Zilla School was established on this day.
It had a British headmaster at the beginning. Educationist Bhagabati Charan Basu was a teacher in the early years. Bhudev Mukhopadhyay was appointed the first Indian headmaster of this school.
In the beginning, classes were held in rented premises. Later, the school moved to a new address and got its own building.
The school students appeared at the Calcutta University entrance examination for the first time in 1885. Umes Chandra Das and Korunanidhan Bandopadhyay were among the distinguished students of the school in its early years.
