On this day, Amrita Bazar Patrika, a news- paper published from Calcutta, carried the
following report.

“WILL GANDHIJI RESORT TO FAST UNTO DEATH?” it was headlined. Filed from Bombay (now Mumbai), it read: “It is understood that at this morning’s meeting of the Congress Working Committee Mahatma Gandhi consulted the members as to what they thought of a ‘Fast Unto Death’ by him if it became necessary. It is gathered most of the members advised him against such a course in his present state of health but eventually left the matter to be finally decided by him.

“Mahatma Gandhi was seen drafting a letter in his own handwriting on the dais in the AICC pandal. It is believed that this is his proposed letter to the Viceroy. (AP)”

The main news of the day was about the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima on August 6 and the debate about dominion status being given to India by the colonial government.
