On this day, Zain-ud-Din Ali Khan, the Nawab of Bengal, passed away. He was also known as Ali Jah. He had succeeded his father, Baber Ali Khan, and ascended the throne in April 1810. He was succeeded by his half-brother, Ahmad Ali Khan. He was the great-grandson of Mir Jafar, who had been made Nawab by the British after the Battle of Plassey.
The titles Zain-ud-Din Ali Khan inherited were many: Shuja ul-Mulk, Mubarak ud-Daula, Nawab Sayyid Zain ud-din Ali Khan Bahadur, Firuz Jang and Nawab Nazim of Bengal, Bihar and Orissa.
Munni Begum, wife of Mir Jafar, and courtiers wanted Abul Qasim Khan Bahadur to become the next Nawab. But the British did not accept the Begum’s suggestion.
