Revolutionary Kanailal Dutta was born on this day. Following the unsuccessful attempt at killing Magistrate Kingsford in Muzaffarpur, several revolutionaries were arrested from Calcutta. They included leaders Aurobindo Ghosh, Barin Ghosh and also the young Kanailal.

They were detained in Alipore prison. One of the arrested, Narendranath Gosain, had turned crown witness.

The revolutionaries decided to kill Gosain, who had been moved to the jail hospital for his safety. Kanailal and another revolutionary, Satyendranath Dutta, got admitted to the hospital. They shot at Gosain, who was killed by the final shots from Kanailal.

Kanailal and Satyendranath were sentenced to death for the murder of Gosain. Kanailal was hanged to death on November 10, 1908, and Satyendranath was hanged to death 11 days later. Kanailal was 20 and Satyendranath was 26.
