The colonial Hindu law came into being in Calcutta on this day, during the tenure of Warren Hastings as the Governor of Bengal.

He framed “A Plan for the Administration of Justice in Bengal”.

Hastings wanted to change the legal structure that was in place from the Mughal times.

With the new plan, Hastings tried to regulate the court system.

He also sought better administration of law. The new judicial plan drew up principles intended to form the basis of judgments.

The British were cautious. At a time when they were yet to establish their authority over vast regions of India, they did not want to disturb the religious beliefs and personal laws of Indian communities.
