On this day, 50-odd people, who were Mysore ruler Tipu Sultan’s descendants and family members and had settled in Vellore after the British defeated and killed Tipu, were put in a ship from Madras (now Chennai) for Calcutta.

Some of them would be placed in “close confinement”, that is imprisoned, at Russapuglah, the former residence of the Persian ambassador.

Abdul Khaliq, Tipu’s son, who was 24, died on board the ship as it was nearing Calcutta.

Tipu’s sons, according to the British, had played their part in starting the Vellore Uprising.

Tipu’s favourite son Muiz ud-din survived the journey and was imprisoned in Calcutta between 1806 and 1813 with Tipu’s third son, Muhi ud-din.
