On this day, the Dutch resumed possession of Java from the British.

This was overseen by John Fendall, an officer of the British East India Company, who had worked in Calcutta and other parts of Bengal.

In 1815, Fendall was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Java. He faced several challenges before handing over Java to the Dutch.

Finally, after the Dutch sent a fleet to take back Java, Fendall refused to give them possession since he had not received orders from the Governor-General.

The Dutch waited till Fendall got the orders.

He returned to Calcutta in 1818. He was appointed a member of the Supreme Council of Bengal in 1820.

He died in Calcutta in 1825 and was buried at South Park Street Cemetery.
