On this day, Shibnibas, a village in Nadia district in Bengal, celebrated its first Independence Day because of a revision made on the border between India and East Bengal after August 15, 1947.

Cyril Radcliffe had drawn up the international borders (The Radcliffe Line) through Punjab and Bengal and divided them into Indian and Pakistani territories.

The original Radcliffe Line had placed sections of Nadia and Murshidabad districts in East Pakistan and Jessore and Khulna in India.

This led to widespread protests and Viceroy Mountbatten asked for a revision.

On the evening of August 17, 1947, All India Radio announced the swapping of the districts.

Residents of Shibnibas celebrated the following day as Independence Day. It still does.
