A group of women marched from the Karunamoyee intersection to the CBI office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake on Thursday afternoon to press for a speedy investigation into the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor at RGKar Medical College and Hospital.
The marchers, who gathered under the banner of Jago Nari Jago Banhisikha, were also demanding that all those involved in the crime be arrested and awarded an “exemplary punishment after a quick trial”.
Many among the protesters carried placards and posters that had “We demand justice” and other slogans written on them.
Retired schoolteacher Sampurna Lahiri, 62, who was in the rally, said they had decided to march to the CBI office because they felt the investigation into the rape and murder by the central agency was tardy.
“We think the probe agency is not doing its job properly. The CBI is taking this probe lightly and that is extremely worrying,” Lahiri said.
Gargi Chatterjee, a resident of Garia and one of the marchers. said the CBI must arrest all those involved in the rape and murder of the young doctor.
“We believe it was not possible for a single person, who was drunk, to commit the heinous crime alone. Who are they trying to shield?” she asked.
After the marchers reached the CGO Complex, a group of women went inside and submitted a letter to the staff in the CBI office.
