A woman was found dead in the apartment of her friend at Garfa where she stayed after a party on Diwali night.
Madhurima Roy, 32, was found lying lifeless on the bed on Friday night. Her friend, Bikas Mandal, claimed that when he saw her lying on the bed he assumed she was sleeping.
Police have started an unnatural death case and sent the body for post-mortem. Madhurima’s family members have told the police that they saw injuries on her body.
“The cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem is done,” said a senior officer of the south suburban division.
Mandal, who is a real estate developer, has reportedly told the police that he went to visit a doctor while Madhurima was alone in his house on Friday. He returned home only to find her “sleeping.”
“...so he did not wake her up,” said an officer of Garfa police station.
After sometime around 8pm, Madhurima’s sister went to the apartment to give her prasad but also found her “sleeping”. The family lives nearby.
“The victim’s sister said when Madhurima did not respond, she switched on the lights and claimed to have seen injuries on her. She alerted the other family members,” said an officer.
Mandal immediately called the police. By the time the cops arrived, the family had already called the ambulance and shifted her into the vehicle.
According to the statement of the ambulance driver, when he reached the building, he saw the victim in a sitting position with her eyes closed. She was carried into the ambulance from there. She was shifted to MR Bangur Hospital where she was declared dead.
During the investigation, the police are said to have found that they had a party at Mandal’s apartment along with a few friends on Diwali night following which Madhurima stayed back.
“She would often stay at Mandal’s home,” said the officer.
Mudhurima’s family did not lodge any complaint till Saturday evening.
