A neurosurgeon on Monday spoke about some lifestyle changes that can maintain good brain health.
L.N. Tripathy, the surgeon, said everyone should keep in mind a few factors to keep their brain in good health.
“Keep your body weight under control. The ideal body weight depends on age and other factors like body mass index,” said Tripathy, the director of Medica Institute of Neurological Diseases.
One should not become obese, he cautioned.
Tripathy listed a few other factors. “Have a balanced diet, sleep for at least six or seven hours daily and avoid consumption of nicotine. Keep your blood pressure, and blood sugar and cholesterol levels under control,” said Tripathy, who is also the vice-chairperson of Medica Superspecialty Hospital.
The surgeon was speaking at a programme organised by the hospital on the occasion of World Brain Day on July 22 (Monday).
There are signs that one should know to understand whether a person has suffered a stroke. If a person displays any of the signs, family members, friends and acquaintances must immediately take him or her to hospital, preferably one with a set-up to treat stroke patients.
“Remember the word FAST,” Tripathy said.
F stands for facial weakness, A for arm weakness, S for speech problem and T for time, he said, listing the warning signs.
A stroke centre should have neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, critical care and emergency doctors, he said. It should also have a cath lab and MRI and CT scan facilities.
