Water supply to the entire north Calcutta, large parts of central Calcutta and some parts of south Calcutta will be stopped at 9am on December 14 to carry out “maintenance work” at the Tallah reservoir, mayor Firhad Hakim and officials of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) said on Friday.
Normal services will resume at 6am on December 15, said a senior official of the KMC.
Supply to parts of Salt Lake, which receive a part of its daily potable water supply from the 113-year-old tank, will have a reduced supply, said an official of the Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC).
“We need to undertake some maintenance work at the Tallah water tank for which a shutdown is necessary. The distribution of water from the Tallah reservoir will be stopped to carry out the work,” mayor Firhad Hakim said on Friday. “Since the demand is less during winter, we carry out such maintenance work during this time of the year.”
A senior KMC official said the shutdown will be used to replace and repair valves and pumps that have suffered damage because of “natural wear and tear”.
The entire north Calcutta, most of central Calcutta and parts of south Calcutta such as Bhowanipore and Kasba are dependent on the Tallah water reservoir for their potable water.
Water supply might take a hit in parts of Salt Lake including ward numbers 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 40 and 41 on December 14. A senior official in the BMC’s water supply department said there will be reduced supply to these wards because of the shutdown.
Salt Lake gets around 12 million gallons of water daily from the New Town water treatment plant and this supply is expected to partially make up for the deficit.
Dover Lane
A portion of Dover Lane, near Gariahat police station, has been dug up to replace a valve in the water supply network. Sources in the KMC said the valve, which is located under the Garden Reach flyover, is malfunctioning.
“The replacement work will be done on December 14,” said the official.
