Two ramps of the Parama flyover — one that leads to it from EM Bypass, near Science City, and the other that lets vehicles approach it from the AJC Bose Road flyover — will be resurfaced, officials of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) said.

Traffic blocks will be needed to complete the task, they said.

Work will start towards the end of August and continue for a month, said a senior
official of the KMDA, which is in charge of the flyover’s maintenance.

“We will coordinate with police and set up roadblocks on the ramps in phases to complete the resurfacing. We are planning to work after 10pm to ensure traffic is not affected much, the official said.

This Parama flyover is one of the busiest flyovers in the city and witnesses a steady stream of traffic every day, the police said.

The east-bound ramp connecting the AJC Bose Road flyover with the Parama flyover is 500m-long.

The EM Bypass ramp — which lets vehicles move up to the Park Circus-bound flank of the Parama flyover from the Bypass near the Science City crossing — is 1.02km-long.

Both ramps are 6m-wide, a KMDA engineer said.

The ramps have developed craters and stretches have subsided, especially near the expansion joints, which cause vehicles to jerk, motorists said.

“The drive through the ramp that leads to the Parama flyover from the AJC Bose Road flyover is bone-jarring,” said Rohan Chakraborty, who drives to his workplace near BBD Bag from Salt Lake and back daily.

A large number of cars and two-wheelers headed to EM Bypass, Salt Lake and other neighbouring areas from central Calcutta use the ramp that links the AJC Bose Road flyover with the Parama flyover.

The police said the uninterrupted journey from one end to another has been the biggest draw for the Parama flyover. Over 150 vehicles reach the racecourse crossing of AJC Bose Road from the flyover every minute. A similar number gets off the flyover’s exit ramps on EM Bypass at the Metropolitan crossing end and at the PC Chandra Garden end, near the Science City intersection.

The repair work is likely to cost over 1.6 crore, the official said.

Crash barriers will be installed on both ramps connecting the AJC Bose Road flyover and the Parama flyover.
