The secretary of the West Bengal Pradesh Trinamool Youth Congress, Tarun Tiwary, was arrested on Friday in connection with a complaint of extortion and kidnap filed against him.
On Friday, the party suspended him for his “anti-party activities” and barred him from using his designation for any correspondence in the future, declared a notice issued from the office of Sayani Ghosh, the president of the Trinamool Youth Congress.
Police said three names were mentioned in the extortion and kidnap complaint. They are: Tiwary, Rahul Purohit and Rahul Singh. Purohit and Singh were also arrested on Friday, the police said.
A woman lodged the extortion and kidnap complaint against the three on Thursday evening.
The woman is a resident of Howrah, whose family runs a business in Posta.
She alleged in the complaint that Tiwary and his two accomplices had offered to help her son obtain a legal document against a payment of ₹3 lakh.
After the woman and her son failed to pay the entire money, they were allegedly kept confined in a building in Posta and threatened with dire consequences if they did not pay the full amount.
The police said they received the complaint on Thursday.
