Ashis Kumar Pandey, a house staff at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, threatened to get some senior doctors at the government facility transferred to remote places if they did not abide by his commands, the CBI told a special court in Alipore on Friday.
Pandey, who was arrested by the central agency on Thursday in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar, was produced in the court on Friday.
He was arrested after being questioned for several hours at the agency’s office in Nizam Palace.
The CBI told the court that Pandey had joined the medical college as house staff in the 2023-24 academic year and allegedly collected huge sums to facilitate, in collusion with then principal Sandip Ghosh, appointment of junior doctors as house staff.
A part of the money allegedly reached Ghosh, the CBI said.
The CBI had arrested Ghosh on September 2 for alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar during his tenure as principal. Later, he was “shown arrest” in the case of rape and murder of a junior doctor at the medical college.
Besides Ghosh, the agency had arrested three men on September 2 in connection with the alleged financial irregularities.
They were Afsar Ali, Ghosh’s additional security guard; Biplab Singha, who supplied medicines and other items to RG Kar; and Suman Hazra, who allegedly supplied medicines and medical equipment at inflated rates to the hospital.
Pandey, who CBI officers said headed the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad unit at RG Kar, was the fifth person arrested in this case. He joined the medical college as an MBBS student in 2017 and completed his internship in the 2022-23 academic year. He then started working as a house staff at the medical college.
“It appears Pandey was eligible for a house staff. His proximity to Sandip Ghosh ensured he became one at RG Kar,” a senior CBI officer later said.
In the court, Pandey’s lawyer wanted to know how someone as young as him could dare to threaten senior doctors to get them transferred to remote places.
The CBI has not been able to explain how they concluded that Pandey collected money for house staff appointments, the lawyer submitted.
After hearing both sides, the court remanded Pandey in CBI custody for three days.
