A team of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probing the alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital visited its morgue on Thursday.

Sources in the central agency said they questioned the hospital officials about the functioning and procedure of preservation of the bodies, the process of post-mortem and how the cool chamber — where the bodies are kept — worked.

The CBI is probing allegations of inflated billing, and extension of favours to a particular set of vendors in running cafeterias, canteens and eateries on the hospital compound.

The complaint lodged by the former deputy superintendent of RG Kar, Akhtar Ali, also accused the former principal, Sandip Ghosh, of being involved in selling unclaimed bodies and biomedical waste.

A CBI officer said all the allegations related to financial fraud can be cross-checked and verified through tender papers, work orders and documents related to billing.

"This allegation of the sale of biomedical waste, however, is extremely sensitive and will need a closer view of the place where the bodies are kept and the people who are entrusted with handling the bodies inside the morgue," he said.

According to Ali's complaint, the major allegations against Ghosh and others are that they are illegally granting contracts to vendors of his choice without following government protocol, nepotism in selecting the vendors, involving third parties for civil and electrical works instead of engaging the PWD, misuse of Covid funds for modernisation of personal office and using it on gym and illegal selling of “used Hazardous Biomedical Wastes” through staff who were close to him.

Allegations of collecting illegal parking fees have also emerged against Ghosh.

On Sunday, the CBI raided 15 locations across the city in connection with the case of financial irregularities at the hospital.

The team that went to Sandip Ghosh's house was made to wait for 75 minutes before he opened the door. The delay in responding to the doorbell had raised doubts about whether Ghosh was trying to contact anyone or trying to destroy evidence.

No one has been arrested or detained in this connection until Thursday.
