A suicide bid at Kalighat station disrupted Metro services on the north-south route (Blue Line) for close to an hour amid the evening rush on Thursday.
A man jumped in front of a New Garia-bound train around 6.20pm, said Metro officials.
A power block had to be taken to rescue the man from the tracks. He could not be identified till Thursday night.
“Truncated services were run between Dakshineswar and Maidan in the north and between Mahanayak Uttam Kumar (Tollygunge) and Kavi Subhash (New Garia) stations in the south. Normal Metro services resumed on the entire stretch (between Dakshineswar and New Garia) at 7.16pm,” said the Metro spokesperson.
But the ripple effect continued well beyond the time the service on the entire stretch was restored.
This was the third disruption in the north-south corridor in less than a week.
Metro services were disrupted during the peak morning rush on Tuesday because of a signal snag at Dum Dum station.
On Monday, a suicide bid at Sovabazar station forced the carrier to run truncated services in the afternoon.
Thursday’s disruption tormented thousands of passengers, most of them headed home from work. The surge in demand for app cabs and bikes led to a hike in fares. Many hopped on overcrowded
buses.
Around 7pm, the pavement outside Radindra Sadan station was teeming with
Metro passengers who were looking for other modes of transport.
“I got a ride after a 10-minute wait,” said Arnab Seal, who took an app-bike to reach his Behala home.
