The state medical council on Thursday cancelled the registration of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh.
Ghosh has been arrested in the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case as well as financial irregularities related to the college.
Ghosh was served a showcause notice by the council on September 8.
The council's registrar, Manas Chakraborty, issued a notice removing his name the list of doctors. "...your name is removed from the Register of Registered Medical Practitioner being maitained by this Coucil w.e.f 19th September 2024...", the notice mentioned.
"This is a temporary cancellation. He can apply for restoration of the registration if he is absolved of all the charges against him, but if he is convicted then the registration will be cancelled permanently," Chakraborty told The Telegraph. "He will not be able to practise if he is released on bail and the criminal charges against him are not dropped," he said.
Ghosh's registration was cancelled under the ‘infamous conduct’ or misconduct clause in medical council, said sources.
The CBI arrested Ghosh on September 14 for his alleged involvement in the rape and murder case. The central agency had earlier arrested Ghosh on September 2 in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the medical college.
