The state health department on Thursday suspended two doctors of the West Bengal Health Service against whom multiple allegations of misconduct have cropped up.

Both doctors — Avik De and Birupaksha Biswas — were allegedly present in the seminar room on the third floor of the Emergency Building of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital when the body of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered was still there.

Neither De nor Biswas was posted at RG Kar.

There are allegations that both were part of a lobby that manipulated appointments in government hospitals and threatened students and faculty members who spoke against them.

Health department insiders said De and Biswas were close to former RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh, who is in CBI custody in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the medical college. Ghosh resigned as principal days after the junior doctor was found raped and murdered on August 9.

De is a member of the West Bengal Medical Council and Biswas is a member of the penal and ethics committee of the council. Both were recently barred from attending meetings of the bodies.

A health official said De and Biswas were suspended because the department received multiple allegations against them.

“De has been accused of threatening students at North Bengal Medical College and influencing the work there,” the official said.

“He was not associated with the medical college. Complaints against Biswas include threatening students and manipulating hostel allotments,” the official said.

“We have suspended them for violation of the service rules and misconduct.”

Biswas was a senior resident in the pathology department of Burdwan Medical College and Hospital. He was transferred to Kakdwip Sub-divisional Hospital last year but Burdwan Medical College did not issue a release order. The order was issued on Tuesday.

De is a postgraduate trainee in general surgery at SSKM Hospital.

De and Biswas were unavailable for comments.

Sagore Dutta hospital

A group of students and junior doctors at the College of Medicine and Sagore Dutta Hospital in Kamarhati, on the northern fringes of the city, allegedly attacked the students who were complaining against them to the authorities during a college council meeting on Thursday.

Monojit Mukherjee, a postgraduate trainee, said the group tried to barge into the room where the meeting was being held. “We closed the door. They broke the glass of the door. Under its impact, my glasses broke and I suffered a cut in my left eye,” he said.
