Metro services were disrupted during the peak morning rush on Tuesday because of a snag at Dum Dum station.

“Trains could not ply between Girish Park and Dakshineswar from 9.20pm because of a signal problem at Dum Dum station. Trains ran between Girish Park and New Garia. The problem was rectified and normal services resumed on the full stretch at 9.50am,” the Metro spokesperson said.

This was the second disruption in the north-south corridor (Blue Line) in the last two days.

On Monday, a suicide bid at Sovabazar station forced the carrier to run truncated services between Central and Kavi Subhash (New Garia) on one side and between Dum Dum and Dakshineswar on another. The disruption started around 11.45am and lasted till 12.18pm.

A Metro official attributed Tuesday’s disruption to an old cable. “Sparks were spotted from an old cable at the yard. The cable was removed and replaced. That took some time,” said the official.

The disruption tormented thousands of passengers. Multiple trains were left stranded. Passengers alleged lack of clear communication from the carrier.

“I waited for a train at Dum Dum for close to 15 minutes. The public address system was not of much help,” said a man who reached Dum Dum from North 24-Parganas by local train and was headed to Esplanade.

Crowds swelled outside the stations as Metro passengers waited for buses and
taxis.
