Jat, 29, a truck driver, is wanted in at least six murder cases, including one in Bengal.

Jat allegedly killed Chatterjee after a dispute over smoking bidi inside a train coach.

Police said Chatterjee had COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) and had objected to Jat smoking inside the compartment. Angered by this, Jat had allegedly used a knife to attack Chatterjee before robbing his mobile phone and money. Chatterjee's body was found on the Katihar Express as it chugged into Howrah station on November 19.

Jat, who was arrested from Vapi by Gujarat police last month, is said to have told the cops that he had killed Chatterjee near Malda and then got off the train leaving Chatterjee’s body in it.

Being physically challenged, Jat would always travel in the compartment for the specially abled that had very few passengers.

“He claimed that he committed the crime when the train was passing through Malda. After that, he got off and took another train to Howrah,” said an investigator. The cops, however, said they were yet to corroborate this claim.

“We needed his custody to verify the facts in connection with the murder,” the officer said.

According to Jat, he had come to Howrah on another train while Chatterjee’s body reached Howrah on the Katihar Express, the police said.

“He said he then took a train to Kharagpur and eventually boarded Ernakulam Express that headed south,” said the officer.

The police said with Jat in custody, they intended to reconstruct the incident and also recover the Chatterjee’s bag that is still missing.
