Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on whose watch a junior doctor was raped and murdered on August 9, has moved the high court seeking to know the procedure on how to liquidate his fixed deposits of Rs 11 lakh.
Ghosh, who is in judicial custody, mentioned in his plea that he wants to liquidate the fixed deposits to deal with a financial crisis his family has been facing.
Ghosh’s lawyer Zohaib Rauf said the petition had been filed on October 14 before the vacation bench of the high court. It is likely to be heard on Friday.
Sources close to Ghosh said his family is finding it difficult to meet their daily expenses and pay his legal fees.
Ghosh was arrested by the CBI on September 2 in connection with alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar. He was later “shown arrest” in connection with the rape and murder of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor.
Ghosh has been denied bail in both cases.
Ghosh’s wife Sangeeta sent an email on October 11 to the nationalised bank where the former principal has fixed deposit accounts, informing the bank officials of her husband’s decision to liquidate the accounts because of a “financial crisis”.
She also mentioned in the mail that her husband was in judicial custody because of “some false allegations made by some unscrupulous elements with vested interests and the matter is sub-judice”.
As Ghosh’s family reportedly did not get any response from the bank, they moved Calcutta High Court on October 14.
Sources close to the family said three of the fixed deposits will mature in 2026 and one in 2027.
The Telegraph contacted Ghosh’s wife for a statement on the family’s attempt to liquidate the fixed deposits. “Please give me some time. I will let you know,” Sangeeta Ghosh responded through a text message.
