On the eve of the Supreme Court hearing on the RG Kar rape and murder, women’s groups have called for Reclaim the Night protests from 11pm on Sunday.

The intervening night between Sunday and Monday morning will also mark one month since the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee of RG Kar was raped and killed in the college.

Several other rallies and protest marches are also planned for Sunday.

The call to Reclaim the Night on Sunday came from 29-year-old social science researcher Rimjhim Sinha, who was also among the first to give the call to reclaim the night on the eve of Independence Day. The sea of people that descended on the streets on the night of August 14 transformed the RG Kar protest into an unparalleled people’s movement.

On Friday, Sinha said: “We are giving this call as we not only want justice for the young doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at her workplace but the safety of women in all places. Sadly, with every government that we have had women’s safety has been largely ignored.”

The night vigil called by Sinha and several other women will start at 11pm.

“We want safe resting places and clean toilets for women who work at night and the authorities must ensure the availability of safe public transport throughout the night. We also want victim blaming to be brought under the ambit of the law. Sex education and gender sensitisation must be included in the curriculum of all school students. These are some of our demands,” Sinha said.

Sunday’s programme is called “Sashak Er Ghum Bhangatey Notun Gaaner Bhor (A dawn of new songs to break the ruler’s slumber)”.

“We are inviting everyone to sing songs and help us wake up the rulers of the state.”

The other rallies planned for Sunday include one by a platform of doctors who will march from NRS Medical College and Hospital to Esplanade at 3pm. Another rally from Gariahat to Rashbehari has been planned between 4pm and 7pm.

The junior doctors’ front has also planned programmes across the city on Sunday. “The proposal is to invite common people and seek their opinion on how to take the agitation forward... We will also run Abhaya Clinics (physical clinics) at multiple locations in the city,” said a junior doctor.

The matter has been listed for hearing by a three-judge bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud at 10.30am on Monday.
