The Sealdah court on Monday remanded Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and Abhijit Mondal, suspended officer in charge of Tala police station, to judicial custody till October 4.

Ghosh and Mondal were arrested in connection with the ongoing probe into the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar on August 9.

While remanding the two in judicial custody the court rapped the central investigating agency for repeated mistakes in filing applications for the custody of the two, first in CBI custody followed by jail custody.

The lawyer representing the CBI initially submitted before the court that the agency sought the custody of Ghosh and Mondal for three days.

The judge said there were no allegations of lack of cooperation by the two during interrogation.

He wondered why the CBI needed to get the custody of the two and said if a report of their questioning sufficed, the agency could consider questioning the two accused in
jail custody.

The judge told the CBI’s lawyer he could make a fresh plea for interrogation while in jail custody. The CBI lawyer returned with a handwritten application stating that the CBI wanted jail custody and skipped the point of interrogation in judicial custody.

The judge then asked the lawyer to make necessary corrections in the application and finally sent Ghosh and Mandal to judicial custody until October 4. It also told the agency not to make these types of mistakes while filing an application.

Sources in the central agency said the CBI wanted to question Mondal and Ghosh about the CCTV footage retrieved from the Tala police station and ask them about their specific roles on the morning of August 9 when the junior doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the chest medicine department on the third floor of the emergency building.

“We have recorded statements of several officers from the police station about their activities on the morning of August 9 after receiving the information that a junior doctor has been found dead in the hospital,” said a CBI official.

“We now want to record what the (former) officer-in-charge and the former principal have to say. We will then follow it up with the CCTV footage that has reached us.”

The CBI had questioned Ghosh earlier in a separate case relating to alleged financial irregularities at RG Kar.
