Sanjay Roy, the Kolkata Police civic volunteer who has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, gave his consent for a polygraph test to be carried out on him. He said he was ready to undergo any test to prove his innocence.

Roy, who was in the custody of the CBI, was produced before the Sealdah court and sent to judicial remand for 14 days. He has been shifted to Presidency Correctional Home in Alipore.

Sources in the court said that when the judge asked him if he had consented to undergo the polygraph test, he gave his consent and said he was willing to undergo any test that would prove his innocence.

The central agency submitted a plea that Roy be remanded in judicial custody. According to the rule, the agency could have submitted a prayer to extend his custody, but they did not.

Roy’s lawyer submitted a bail prayer for him, but it was rejected.

“We submitted a bail petition before the court. But it was rejected,” said Kabita Sarkar, Roy’s lawyer.

Sarkar said if she had to talk to her client, she would submit a court petition to meet him during the period of judicial custody. She said she did not submit any petition on Friday.

Roy was brought to the Sealdah court compound in a heavily guarded prison van. The van was escorted by Kolkata Police.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the court and many inside the court stepped out on the balconies and raised slogans demanding “justice” for the victim when the CBI and the police were taking Roy into the court building.

Roy was whisked inside the court and after obtaining his consent for the polygraph test, he was shifted to a room inside because of safety reasons.

Later, after his judicial remand, he was taken to Presidency Correctional Home.

For the next two weeks, Roy would share the jail compound with Trinamool Congress leaders Partha Chatterjee and Jyotipriya Mullick and criminals like Aftab Ansari.

Roy, considering the sensitivity of the case, has been lodged inside cell number 21 of a ward named Poila Baish (Poila 22). He will be alone in the cell. Two guards have been posted outside his cell, which is covered by CCTV cameras.

Sources in the jail department said Roy's parameters were “normal” when he was brought to the jail.

“Like the other undertrial prisoners, he had roti, dal and sabzi for dinner. He was mostly quiet after he came to the jail,” said a source.

The CBI on Friday summoned all police personnel who were on duty on the night of August 8 and the morning of August 9 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Some of them turned up at the agency's office in the CGO Complex on Friday.

“They are being asked things like the sequence of events, when they come to know about the death, whether any of them saw the body and what they saw inside the seminar hall,” said an officer.
