Sandip Ghosh, who was the principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital when the junior doctor was raped and murdered, was questioned by the CBI for the fourth consecutive day on Monday, amid a fresh complaint against him with Kolkata Police for allegedly identifying the victim by her name.

CBI sleuths said there was a gap of around 25 minutes between Ghosh coming to know of the death and the police outpost being informed.

“There was a gap of around 25 minutes (between Ghosh being told about the death and the matter being reported to the police outpost). We are trying to ascertain the reason for this gap,” said a CBI officer.

Senior officers of Kolkata Police said Ghosh was informed about the death of the young doctor at 9.45am on August 9.

“He (Ghosh) came to know about the death at 9.45am. But he sent a closed envelope to Tala police station informing them about the death at 3pm. He described the incident in a few lines. The commissioner of the city police and other senior officers had reached the hospital long before that,” said an officer of the city police.

Sources in the CBI said Ghosh, who left the agency’s office at CGO Complex in Salt Lake around 11.25pm, was quizzed about the sequence of the events after the young doctor’s body was found in the seminar hall of the Emergency Building of the hospital on August 9.

Sources in the CBI said they questioned Ghosh about the standard operating procedure on the entry and exit of outsiders at RG Kar. “He was asked about the system that had been in place and if he had thought the system was adequate,” said an officer in the central agency.

Ghosh, sources said, was questioned about the decision to renovate a section of the same floor of the Emergency Building where the seminar hall is located.

Ghosh reportedly told the agency officers that the decision was taken following demands from junior doctors to set up rooms for interns and washrooms.

Multiple allegations have surfaced against Ghosh since the postgraduate trainee in the chest medicine department was found raped and murdered.

The victim’s parents had alleged that their daughter was “under tremendous pressure” and was unable to perform her duties properly because of pressure from her seniors in the hospital.

“We are probing all possible angles. He (Ghosh) is being quizzed for long hours as we want to know all the details about the incident,” said a CBI officer.

Sources said the CBI also questioned Ghosh about his possible links with Sanjay Roy, who is in custody for the rape and murder of the 31-year-old.

CBI sources on Monday said they had submitted a prayer in the Sealdah court to conduct a polygraph test on Roy.

The court asked the central agency to present Roy so it can ascertain whether he had given his consent for the test. Without the consent, the test cannot be performed.

A CBI team visited multiple locations on Monday, including one in Chetla where Roy had claimed to have gone before turning up at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of the rape and murder.

The team also went to the victim’s house with a laptop and several documents. The sleuths stepped out after around six hours.

Another team visited various departments of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Two doctors accompanied the team.
