A woman in her 20s has alleged that she was raped by a man whom she met for the first time at a pub on Park Street on Sunday and was then invited to his house in north Calcutta’s Shyampukur.

Based on her complaint, the accused, identified as Dipak Mukherjee, was arrested from his house early on Wednesday. He has been remanded in police custody.

Mukherjee, a resident of Aurobindo Sarani, is a businessman, police said. He has denied the allegations, an officer said.

According to the woman’s complaint, she had gone to a pub on Park Street on Sunday where she met the accused for the first time and was lured into accompanying him further.

“They met at the pub for the first time, spent several hours there and then went to a cafe. Early on Monday, the man invited her to his apartment in north Calcutta, where he lived alone,” said a Kolkata Police officer.

The police said the woman alleged that he raped her in the house.

The woman left the house later in the day and reported the matter to Shyampukur police station on Monday night.

A senior police officer said that based on the written complaint submitted by the woman, a team from the police station arrested the man early on Wednesday.

A police team, accompanied by the woman, went to Aurobinda Sarani to search Mukherjee’s apartment.

“Several things that are relevant to the case, including the bed sheet, have been seized,” said a police officer.

Another officer said the entire “search and seizure” operation was videographed, as required by the law.

The police said they submitted a prayer in the court for permission to record the woman’s statement before a magistrate. The court has allowed the prayer but the police have yet to get the date for the procedure.

The police said they would collect CCTV footage from the pub and the cafe where the woman said she had interacted with the accused on Sunday night.

Around 12 years ago, an incident of gang rape was reported where a woman had met a group of men at a night club on Park Street and was then invited into their car, where she was raped.
