Rain has washed away the top layer of several main roads across Salt Lake.

Peppered with potholes and craters of all sizes, the roads make it difficult for motorists to drive on and pose a risk to pedestrians as well.

At least three Salt Lake residents have been injured after they fell while trying to walk down these roads, either slipping on loose stone chips or losing their balance after stepping into a large crater.

Many residents said they are forced to keep windows and doors shut as dust clouds hang over several places because of the bad roads, including the Karunamoyee intersection, DL, EE, HA and ED blocks.

Several deep craters and potholes at the Building More intersection near the SAI Complex greet those headed to the township from EM Bypass.

Several deep potholes have formed at the Hyatt intersection both on the EM Bypass and Salt Lake-bound flanks of Salt Lake Stadium Road.

Both these intersections are the main entry and exit points of Salt Lake from EM Bypass apart from the Chingrighata flyover.

Several stretches of Broadway that cut across the township have also subsided in several places and craters have formed too.

A nine-foot crater has formed near the Bijan Bhavan island on Broadway close to the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC). Several potholes can be seen at the GD island as well.

The Telegraph has reported on multiple occasions about the sorry state of the road network in Salt Lake.

The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) after being 0formed in 2015 has not carried out full-fledged road repairs. Only patchwork repairs have been done for nearly a decade.

An engineer of the BMC’s road repairs department said that the roads of the township now need to be scraped away and a new layer of asphalt needs to be laid.

“If the roads are not scraped away and a new layer of asphalt complete with a properly laid bed foundation is done then the roads will continue to break down every few weeks,” said the engineer.

Mayor Krishna Chakraborty, however, said that they will yet again bank on patchwork repairs.

“We will try to repair a major section of the roads that have broken down in Salt Lake before Durga Puja starts. We will start patchwork repairs once a dry period of at least a week sets in,” said Chakraborty.
