Park Street traffic restrictions for Christmas: Your guide to festive celebrations

Calcutta is all lit up and festive ahead of Christmas. But before you head to the heart of the celebrations or if you are still looking for a destination, here’s what you need to know

Vehicles will not be allowed on Park Street “as and when required” on Christmas (Wednesday), police have said in a traffic advisory. On Christmas Eve (Tuesday), several curbs will be in place and two-way traffic will not be allowed on Park Street before 3am on Wednesday, instead of the usual 10pm, the advisory says.

Traffic curbs

Christmas Eve

  • Both-way traffic on Park Street, Shakespeare Sarani and all other connecting and feeder roads except Chowringhee Road (JL Nehru Road) will not be allowed before 3am on December 25.
  • Cathedral Road will be closed for vehicles as and when required.
  • Queensway, along the Victoria Memorial, will be one-way (from east to west) as and when required.
  • North and south-bound vehicles will ply along Chowringhee Road from the Ho Chi Minh Sarani crossing to the AJC Bose Road intersection. If needed, south-bound vehicles will be diverted along Queensway.

Christmas

(The curbs will be in place as and when required, the police said)

  • Park Street — from the Chowringhee Road (JL Nehru Road) crossing till the Wood Street intersection — and Middleton Street will be closed to traffic.
  • Only Camac Street-bound vehicles will ply on Ho Chi Minh Sarani.
  • Both-way traffic will be allowed on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road between the Royd Street crossing and the Park Street intersection.
  • Little Russel Street, from the Shakespeare Sarani crossing to the Russell Street crossing, will be closed to vehicles.
  • Vehicles from Outram Road bound for Park Street and AJC Bose Road will travel through Ho Chi Minh Sarani and Camac Street and then through Short Street and Wood Street to reach Park Street.
  • Both-way traffic will be allowed along Camac Street between the Ho Chi Minh Sarani intersection and the Short Street crossing.
  • West-bound traffic along Elliot Road from AJC Bose Road crossing will be restricted.

Goods vehicles

The movement of goods vehicles will be restricted from the following intersections from 4pm on Christmas Eve to 4am on December 25 and from 4pm on Christmas till police deem fit on December 26.

  • AJC Bose Road-Chowringhee Road (towards north)
  • AJC Bose Road-Cathedral Road-Harish Mukherjee (towards north)
  • Red Road-Mayo Rod
  • Mayo Road-Dufferin Road
  • Cathedral Road-Queensway
  • Chowringhee Road-Shakespeare Sarani

No parking

Parking will not be allowed on Park Street (from JL Nehru Road to Wood Street), Middleton Street, Short Street, Wood Street (from Short Street to Park Street), Ho Chi Minh Sarani, Camac Street (from Middleton Street to Short Street), Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road (from Royd Street to Park Street) and Elliot Road.

Weather

The sky is likely to be partly cloudy on Tuesday and Wednesday. “Rain is not ruled out in Calcutta but the chances are little. The neighbouring district of South 24-Parganas may get isolated showers,” said a Met official.

A Western Disturbance, now over Pakistan, is expected to move eastwards over the next two days. It might bring some clouds to Calcutta, the official said. The nights will be warmer than usual. The minimum temperature will be around 16 degrees.

METRO RAIL

North-south corridor
(Blue Line)

  • No change in services on Tuesday.
  • On Wednesday, the last train will leave Dakshineswar at 10.53pm and New Garia (for Dum Dum) at 11pm.
  • There will be 224 trains, instead of the usual 248, on Christmas.

East-West Metro

(Green Line 1, between Sealdah and Sector V)

Metro will operate 90 trains, instead of the usual 106, on Christmas.

In all the remaining sections, normal services will be available, the carrier said.
