The rear hanger of the pay-loader hit Soumyo Sil, the Class IX student, while he was on his way to tuition through the crater-riddled Dinesh Nagar Road in Bansdroni.

Since early Thursday, groups of labourers have been repairing the uneven ground around the accident site, digging up several metres of the road and re-laying it uniformly. The work continued on Friday.

“Sand, loaded on wheelbarrows, is being used to cover the surface and bricks are being laid on the top to make the stretch suitable for vehicles. The undulating surface will be evened out. The work will continue till Panchami. The adjoining lanes and bylanes, which are also in a sorry state, will also be repaired,” said an official of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The residents have been demanding this since 2017, when the road was dug up.

A total of five cases have been filed in connection with Wednesday’s incident, the police said. Two of them are in connection with obstructing the police from doing their job.

On Wednesday, hundreds of people gheraoed the officer-in-charge of Patuli police station and abused him and forced him to stand in a slushy pothole for over six hours.

OC Tirthankar Dey was rescued by a group of Trinamool Congress workers.

Five persons have so far been arrested for “instigating” a mob.
