A nursery student of Calcutta Boys’ School died after taking ill on his way to school on Friday.
Tanush Roy, a resident of Kestopur, complained of pain in his gut in the pool car and had started throwing up by the time the car came near the school, said police sources.
Tanush was first rushed to a private hospital in Taltala and then taken to NRS Medical College and Hospital. He was declared dead at NRS.
Tanush, who would have turned five on October 17, had attended school till Thursday and even took assessments, said an official of Calcutta Boys’ School.
The school principal, Raja McGee, told Metro: “I was informed by a coordinator that the child got sick outside the school. He could not enter the school. It is extremely unfortunate”.
A case of unnatural death has been registered at Tala police station.
An official at NRS Medical College and Hospital said: “The boy was declared dead upon arrival”.
A relative was heard telling news channels that Tanush had not been keeping well and that he complained of abdominal pain.
Tanush’s father, Sourav Roy, told this newspaper: “He was healthy. He started throwing up after getting off the pool car in front of the school”.
Tanush’s body underwent a magisterial inquest in the presence of an officer of the rank of a deputy commissioner. A post-mortem will follow.
“Prima facie, there is no evidence of any foul play. It seems the child was unwell,” said an officer.
Tanush and his batchmates usually reached school around 7.45am.
“There was a commotion outside the school in the morning. Many parents were there. It was then that it came to our notice that a child had taken ill. It was just before 8am,” the source said.
In an obituary posted on social media, the schoolwrote: “Calcutta Boys’ School finds itself enveloped in sorrow upon the unfortunate and premature demise of Master Tanush Roy.... We seek the blessings of the Divine, for the comfort, consolation and resilience of his bereaved family, during this time of anguish and pain”.
