Jadavpur University decided on Wednesday that it will not allow students to lock the doors of the rooms allotted to teachers across departments in the name of agitation anymore.
The university issued a statement signed by registrar Snehamanu Basu after the students of the journalism and mass communication department at JU locked the door of a room shared by the former head and an assistant professor of the department, alleging lapses in the evaluation of answer scripts on Monday.
“The university does not approve of putting a lock on the door of a room of two teachers by some students in the name of protests. In the future, the university will take appropriate steps so such instances don’t recur,” the statement said.
The protesting students held the former head of the department, Santwan Chattopadhyay, and an assistant professor of the department, Abhishek Das, responsible for the alleged lapses in evaluating papers of the first- and second-semester exams.
“The issue was discussed in a meeting of the board of studies late on Wednesday. The room will be unlocked on Thursday,” said the head of the department, Parthasarathi Chakrabarti.
“We took the step because the two teachers were toying with students’ future. The university has already showcased them,” said Sagir Piyada, one of the protesting students.
