Dark overhead clouds lent an ominous look to the Calcutta sky late on Saturday afternoon.
The rain that followed was, however, not as threatening.
The Met office recorded around 15mm of rain in Alipore, which serves as the official record-keeper for Calcutta.
Almost all of Calcutta got rain, troubling shoppers at markets.
The next few days are likely to be cloudy in parts. Rain is expected but it is unlikely to be heavy, said a Met official.
“The low-pressure area over north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh and West Bengal has become less marked. However, the associated cyclonic circulation lies over northern parts of Gangetic Bengal and neighbourhood and extends up to 3.1km above mean sea level,” said the daily weather report issued by the Met office in Alipore.
The clouds that triggered the rain on Saturday came from the cyclonic circulation.
“The cyclonic circulation is over Murshidabad and Birbhum. It will also weaken gradually. But the monsoon currents are still active. They will still lead to some cloud formation and rain,” said a Met official.
The official Met forecast said: “Light to moderate rain or thundershower very likely to occur at many places over all the districts of sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Murshidabad, Nadia, North and South 24-Parganas... and the remaining districts of gangetic West Bengal”.
