Subways allowing vehicular movement will come up at four major intersections in New Town.

Based on the existing vehicular underpass at the Kolkata Gate crossing near Rabindra Tirtha, these subways are going to be built at the Chinar Park crossing, near City Centre II, in front of the Smart Connect building around 1km from Derozio College and the Westin Hotel intersection, a senior official of the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco), that builds infrastructure in the township, said.

The construction work will be preceded by a detailed traffic survey as sections of these crossings will be cordoned off.

The traffic survey will be carried out over one week. The movement of vehicles during the day and at night will be recorded. Apart from the traffic survey, a detailed mapping of underground utilities and drainage systems in the areas where the subways will come up will be carried out.

“After the surveys are completed and the tests are carried out for the feasibility, experts will vet the structural design,” said the official.

Heavy vehicles like trucks and buses will not be allowed to use the underpasses.

The underpass for vehicles at the Kolkata Gate intersection has been built around 4.2m below the road surface. It is around 320m-long and has four lanes. It spans 7m in width and has a small median divider.

A Hidco engineer said the underpass rests on a 650mm bed slab of reinforced concrete cement (RCC), which rests on a bed of sand that is 1m deep. A layer of pavement-quality concrete reinforces the foundation.

The pedestrian subway complex at the same crossing sits below the vehicular underpass at a depth of 8m. It was opened in 2021 while the vehicular subway was opened in 2023.

“We are building the subways to decongest these crossings,” a Hidco engineer said.

Hidco has already initiated the tender for the feasibility study and soil tests.
