Bharat Deb Burman, a member of the former ruling family of the princely state of Tripura, passed away at his residence in Calcutta on Tuesday morning.
According to sources, an ambulance service from a private hospital in south Calcutta was summoned to the Harrington Street residence, where the 75-year old Dev Varma, who acted in 'Memories in March' along with the late Rituparno Ghosh and Deepti Naval, lived. He was known as 'Habi'.
According to sources, Dev Varma married to actor and former Trinamul Lok Sabha MP Moon Moon Sen, breathed his last before the ambulance could reach.
The cause of death is not known yet.
Chief minister Mamata Banerjee said, Moon Moon and Raima were in Delhi and are rushing back to Calcutta. “I spoke with Moon Moon. She was not aware. He was a very decent person. I have lost a well-wisher, a family member. I have lost someone my own. The local councillors are her. The police has been instructed to create a green corridor as soon as Moon Moon arrives. He was not unwell, as far as I know. Two nights ago they had a party. In winter stroke and heart attacks happen early in the morning,” Mamata said.
He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Raima and Ria, both actors.
Moon Moon Sen who married Dev Burman in 1976 had always praised him for his support to her career.
"I give him 100 per cent credit for the success and stability of our marriage. Going by film marriages, ours is a pretty steady one. He is protective of all of us. His sense of humour, tolerance, understanding and love is just beyond words. He thoroughly enjoys my being in my profession because it opens up a whole new world for him."
A private person, Dev Burman was seen at film and polo events.
