The sub-inspector of police who has been accused of molesting a civic volunteer at Park Street police station early on October 5 was arrested on Monday.
Abhishek Roy, the accused, was granted bail by the Bankshall court.
“Based on the complaint lodged by a woman civic volunteer, the officer was questioned throughout Sunday at the police station and was later arrested. He couldn’t provide satisfactory answers,” said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.
In her complaint to police, the civic volunteer alleged that she had been molested in a third-floor room of the police station, where the sub-inspector called her around 1.10am on October 5.
The woman mentioned in her complaint that she ran down to the ground floor and alerted the officer on duty about the alleged molestation, a senior police officer said.
The woman said she wanted to lodge a complaint but the officer allegedly refused to record it and advised her to settle the matter with the accused, the officer added.
The civic volunteer then wrote a complaint and sent it to the commissioner of Kolkata Police, additional commissioner of police 1, deputy commissioner in charge of the south division of Kolkata Police and the officer in charge of Park Street police station.
The civic volunteer, who has been posted at Park Street police station since 2017, wrote in her complaint that the accused had tried to touch her inappropriately earlier, too.
A programme was organised at the police station on the night of October 4 to distribute new garments among the staff, the woman wrote in her complaint.
The accused handed her a set of new clothes and then touched her inappropriately, the woman has alleged.
Based on her complaint, the accused has been “closed.” A “closed” officer is not assigned any duty till the order is withdrawn.
