An app-based bike rider has been arrested for allegedly molesting a woman from Thailand in the landing area of her rented flat on the fringes of Salt Lake late on Sunday, police said.
The biker was arrested after the woman filed a complaint early on Monday.
A senior officer of the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate, quoting the woman’s complaint, said she had booked the ride from in front of a lounge on EM Bypass on Sunday night.
According to the officer, after reaching home, the woman requested the rider of the app bike to wait downstairs while she got the cash from her flat to pay him.
The woman in her complaint alleged that the app bike rider followed her upstairs and molested her in the landing area of the flat after she stepped out with the cash, the officer said.
The accused has been booked under Section 75 (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
“We arrested the rider of the app bike after we received the complaint from the woman,” said the police officer.
Another officer said the accused told them during questioning that the woman had started complaining about the fare being too high.
“During questioning, the app bike rider told us that he went upstairs after waiting for the woman for more than 20 minutes and claimed that the woman had got into an argument with him about the fare being too high,” said the officer.
The rider of the app bike was produced in a Salt Lake court on Monday. He has been granted bail.
A senior police officer said a good way to travel safely was to send photographs of the vehicle, an app bike or app cab, and its number plate to a family member or friend before starting the trip.
Save the number of family members and friends on speed dial. For any emergency one should dial 100, he said.
