The woman who complained against Bhattacharya had got her statement recorded before a magistrate on Tuesday.

According to the complaint, Bhattacharya had allegedly sat on her lap when she went to his house for a professional assignment.

Bhattacharya was suspended from the CPM within a few hours of the allegations being levelled by the woman.

“Bhattacharya was questioned about his meeting with the woman, about her allegations on the specific date of the incident and on the past incidents that the woman has mentioned,” said a senior officer of the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate.

The woman has also alleged that Bhattacharya had made advances towards her before.

Bhattacharya has refuted the charges and said the woman appeared to be weighing 40kg and his own weight was 83kg.

“The lady who made the complaint appears to be weighing around 40kg and my weight is 83kg. Just imagine if a person of 83kg sits on a person weighing 40kg, will the latter remain physically fit?” Bhattacharya had told reporters at his home. His comment triggered a fresh round of controversy.

He later said the comment was made by his wife and repeated by him at the press conference.

Bhattacharya has been charged under sections of outrage of modesty of a woman.

The woman first made her allegations public through a Facebook live post from her account and then lodged a complaint with the Barrackpore police.
