The city police on Tuesday suspended three officers — two assistant commissioners and an inspector — for “dereliction of duty” during the attack on RG Kar Medical College and Hospital by an armed mob on August 14 night.

The action came more than five days after the violence was reported and hours after the Supreme Court came down heavily on the role of Kolkata Police in failing to safeguard the hospital.

The court on Tuesday raised questions about the city police’s ability to secure the hospital and ordered the deployment of CISF personnel.

Kolkata Police joint commissioner of police (headquarters) Meeraj Khalid confirmed on Tuesday night that the three officers, who were on duty in the hospital compound on the night of the attack, had been suspended for dereliction of duty and a departmental inquiry had been initiated against them.

Sources in the police identified the officers as assistant commissioners Ramesh Ray Chowdhury and Sakilur Sardar and inspector Rajesh Minj.

Last week, Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal admitted “failure in assessment” of the situation at a news conference at the city police headquarters.

Kapil Sibal, the counsel for the state in the apex court on Tuesday, submitted that a 7,000-strong mob was involved while 150 cops were on duty outside the hospital that night.

Sources said the police did not anticipate the attack on the hospital while thousands of women had hit the roads that night as part of a “Reclaim the Night” call.
