Menswear designer Ratul Sood passed away in Calcutta on Sunday. He was 58.
He collapsed while playing golf at a south Calcutta club around noon. Sources at the club said Sood was rushed to MR Bangur Hospital, where he was declared dead on
arrival.
Sood leaves behind wife Komal, also a designer. The couple have two sons.
Sood is known for bespoke tailored suits for men that merged Savile Row craftsmanship with Indian sensibilities.
The Park Mansion store of the Soods (opposite Mocambo restaurant) has a legacy of over 55 years in making menswear in Calcutta.
Burlingtons’ Sood, the name by which this designer store has now been known for many years, houses fashion labels by the husband-wife designer duo Ratul and Komal Sood. The store opened doors with a revamped look last year.
The ever-smiling Sood was also a prominent member of the social circuit of Calcutta.
As the news of his death broke, social media was flooded with “gone too soon”
comments from friends and colleagues.
A family friend said Sood would be cremated on Wednesday. “One of his sons studies abroad. They are waiting for his return,” the friend said.
