Mayor Firhad Hakim conducted a late-night inspection of the roads ahead of Durga Puja on Monday.

He was accompanied by officials of the roads, lighting, solid waste management, parks and squares and other Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) departments, along with senior police officers.

The inspection identified several important roads that need repairs. Some have poor lighting. Some others need proper solid waste disposal. Metro work has compounded problems in some stretches, said a KMC official.

Some of the repair jobs will be taken up before the Puja and some, after it, sources in the civic body said.

Important thoroughfares like SN Banerjee Road, BB Ganguly Street, Beliaghata Road and Diamond Harbour need repairs, Hakim said.

The inspection revealed that a stretch of SP Mukherjee Road near Tollygunge Phari and Judges Court Road in Alipore also needs repair. The Sealdah railway overbridge and Gariahat flyover are also in bad shape.

A stretch of Bagmari Lane near the fire station, the area covering the Shyambazar intersection and the New Park Street that connects Mullickbazar and Park Circus, have poor lights, Hakim said.

A senior KMC official said the solid waste management department will remove ragpickers from Southern Avenue near the Golpark intersection and Gariahat.

The parks and squares department has to develop a "green verge" near the approach to Southern Avenue at Golpark. The trees on Rashbehari Avenue need trimming, Hakim told officials.

The mayor asked for a utility tunnel — for underground cables — under Diamond Harbour Road near the Mint.

The department of roads has been tasked with coordinating with the RVNL for better upkeep of Diamond Harbour Road. The stretch near Mominpore needs special attention, sources in the civic body said. The road is prone to accidents because of Metro construction.

The RVNL is the executing agency of the Joka-Esplanade Metro corridor, now operational between Joka and Majerhat on DH Road.

"We will start repairs on the stretch from Tuesday night," an official of the civic body said in the evening.

"We have found undulations on several city roads. These will be repaired but in a phased manner after the Puja," said the official.
