The low-pressure area was over south Bangladesh and the neighbourhood on Saturday morning. It was earlier over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Bengal and Bangladesh.

“It is likely to move slowly north-northwestwards and become a well-marked low-pressure area over Bangladesh and adjoining Gangetic West Bengal by August 19. Thereafter, it is likely to move westnorthwestwards across the Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand and adjoining Bihar and Uttar Pradesh and adjoining Madhya Pradesh during the subsequent 3-4 days,” said a Met bulletin issued on Saturday afternoon.

“The monsoon trough now passes through Bikaner, Vanasthali, Shivpuri, Sidhi, Ranchi and thence to the centre of the low-pressure area,” the bulletin said.

A Met official said the trough passes through north of Canning, not far from Calcutta. Canning is around 60km from the heart of the city.

“Calcutta and the neighbouring areas are likely to see an increase in the volume and intensity of rain from Sunday. Heavy rain is not ruled out on one of these days,” said the Met official.

The Met bulletin predicted:

  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20cm) in Hooghly, Birbhum and East and West Burdwan and heavy rainfall (7-11cm) over the remaining districts of south Bengal on Sunday.
  • Heavy to very heavy rainfall in Murshidabad, Birbhum, and Nadia districts and heavy rainfall in the remaining districts of south Bengal on Monday.
  • Heavy rainfall in Birbhum, East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Purulia, and Murshidabad on Tuesday.
  • Heavy rainfall in Birbhum, West Burdwan and Murshidabad on Wednesday.
