Light rain is likely in Calcutta on all days of Durga Puja, the Met office said in a bulletin issued on Thursday.
“Partly cloudy sky with light rain/thundershower likely to occur in some areas,” reads the forecast for Calcutta for October 10 to 13.
This year, Saptami falls on October 10. Ashtami and Navami will be on the same day, October 11.
“As of now, there is no hint of the showers being heavy. A complete washout is very unlikely. The showers can also be sporadic. Esplanade may be wet and Behala dry at the same time,” said H.R. Biswas, head of the weather section at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Calcutta.
“The sky will be sunny and cloudy in phases.”
The Met office will issue another detailed Puja forecast on Monday.
The run-up to Durga Puja is likely to be rainy. “Light to moderate rain/thundershower” is expected across south Bengal from October 5 to 9, said another Met bulletin.
A low-pressure area brewing over the Bay is expected to cause rain across Bengal till Saturday. Even after the system dissipates, the monsoon currents will keep bringing some rain, said Met officials.
“An upper air circulation lies over southeast Bangladesh and neighbourhood extending up to 5.8km above mean sea level. A trough runs from northeast Bihar to north Andaman Sea across the above cyclonic circulation over southeast Bangladesh and east Bay of Bengal at 0.9km above mean sea level,” said a Met bulletin.
“Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over north Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood around October 4.”
Heavy rainfall is likely in Murshidabad on Saturday. Thunderstorms are likely in all the districts of south Bengal on Friday.
North Bengal, which is witnessing formidable rainfall, is likely to be rainy till at least October 13. Districts like Cooch Behar, Alipurduar, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and South Dinajpur are likely to get heavy rain on Saturday, the Met office said.
In Calcutta, the past few days have been very taxing because of the high humidity. Several parts in and around Calcutta received intermittent rain on Mahalaya. Thursday was consistently cloudy and had spells of showers. The clouds and rain have brought some relief from the sweaty conditions.
The monsoon has withdrawn from most parts of northwest India and some parts of central India, including Delhi, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday.
“But the monsoon currents are still active in our region. The usual date of the withdrawal of the monsoon from south Bengal is around October 15,” said a Met official in Calcutta.
Because of the clouds and rain, the maximum temperature or the general day temperature is likely to remain lower than usual for the next couple of days, according to the forecast.
