The police said they received a complaint from Mariyam Chakraborthy, a resident of Chitpore, on July 25 that her father Mohon Chakraborthy, who had gone to Bihar for business purposes, had been kidnapped by the men he went to meet.

“According to the complaint, the family had received ransom calls. The kidnappers had demanded a huge amount of money for the release of the trader,” said an officer at Chitpore police station.

“It was mentioned in the complaint that Mohon Chakraborthy had gone to Gaya to trade in antiques.”

In her complaint Mariyam named some persons, who she alleged had conspired to kidnap her father.

Sources said the police traced the location of the kidnappers and the place where they had kept the trader.

A senior police officer said a lot of care was taken during the rescue to ensure that the kidnappers did not harm the trader.

“In such cases, the priority is to rescue the victim unharmed. We took all the precautions so the kidnappers did not get any inkling that the police had launched a rescue mission. Else, they would have panicked and caused harm to the trader,” said an officer at the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar.

A team of officers from the detective department of the city police went to Gaya and located the hideout, where Chakraborthy was kept, on Sunday morning.

“The businessman, a resident of Chandranath Simlai Lane in Chitpore, was rescued from the hideout and one of the kidnappers was arrested,” said an officer of the detective department.

“We are trying to locate the other kidnappers. A search has been launched,” said the officer.
