The principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital resigned on Monday as several heads kept rolling at the hospital since the junior doctors began a cease-work protesting against the rape and murder of one of their colleagues at the hospital.

The resignation of principal Sandip Ghosh was one of the demands of the protesting doctors. Ghosh, however, was appointed as the principal of Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital.

Suhrita Pal, a former vice-chancellor of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, was appointed as the new principal of RG Kar.

Ajay Ray, principal, National Medical College, was made an officer on special duty at Swasthya Bhavan.

Later in the day, the tenure of Siddhartha Niyogi, the director of health services, was abruptly ended.

“We appointed Debasish Halder in his position. Niyogi would have retired soon,” said a senior official.

Chandan Guha, assistant commissioner of police, north division, was removed from the post on Sunday. Sources said Guha was responsible for all policing issues at RG Kar.
