Jewellery worth several lakhs of rupees was stolen from a house in Baguiati’s Hatiara, police said.

The house was empty as owner Sandeep Kumar Gupta, his wife and two children had gone to Kankinara in North 24-Parganas on Tuesday, the police said.

Gupta’s neighbours alerted him on Sunday after they saw a broken lock hanging from the grille at the main entrance to the house. Gupta reached the city and filed a complaint with Baguiati police station.

He mentioned in the complaint that gold jewellery including bangles, rings, necklaces and armbands, several diamond necklaces, earrings and silver ornaments were missing from an almirah.

“They took jewellery worth more than 10 lakh after breaking open an almirah in one of the bedrooms. They also took 5,000 in cash,” Avishek Shaw, Gupta’s family friend, told The Telegraph on Sunday.

Gupta, who owns and operates cabs that pick up and drop off employees of several companies in Sector V, said he had left home on Tuesday for his one-month-old son’s vaccination.

“We took him to a hospital on EM Bypass. After the vaccination, we decided to head to my in-laws’ house in Kakinara. We had planned to stay there for a few more days but had to return after neighbours alerted us about the break-in,” said Gupta.

The family had moved into the two-storey house in Hatiara in 2009.

According to Gupta, multiple locks on the house’s main gate and the gate on the second floor were broken.

A police team visited the house on Sunday afternoon.

“We have made a list of the stolen items and have spoken to the family members and some neighbours,” said a senior officer in the Bidhannagar Police Commissionerate.

According to the officer, they were looking for CCTV footage from the area. The house does not have any CCTV cameras.
